Abstract
This article suggests that cluster analysis has substantial advantages over more frequently used methods of classifying residential areas and summarizing a real data. It can be used to define neighborhood types and display their characteristics and spatial patterns in a way that is easily under stood by planners and others who may have little mathematical background. The article explains the advantages and characteristics of cluster analysis and describes its wide-ranging applications by the Los Angeles Community Analysis Bureau.
