Abstract
In Reply.— David's parents conceived him not on the 50% chance of having SCID but on the basis of the bubble and the optimistic projections of the medical team for finding a cure. The team did a disservice to the family in offering them this unwarranted hope for a cure, especially in the days immediately following the death of their first son having SCID. The Bubble Boy was conceived approximately four weeks after the death of his brother. Sometime during those weeks of grief the family received genetic counseling from the medical team. That the putative leader of the medical team (a PhD gnotobiologist, not an MD as Rennie states) was a Brother of the Roman Catholic church was probably unhelpful rather than helpful and probably represents in this case a conflict of interest.
