Abstract
A numerical procedure is presented for the determination of the inelastic buckling behavior of an initially straight or wavy column before and after the occurrence of the maximum load. A point of bifurcation of equilibrium positions may occur for an initially straight as well as wavy column. Beyond the tangent modulus load of an initially straight column, the bent configuration is preferred because of its lower potential energy. The maximum load of an imperfect column depends on the amplitude as well as the wave shape of the initial imperfection. Keywords
