Abstract
Mycoplasmas infect many cell types in culture by attaching to the plasma membrane and remaining localized extracellularly in close association with the host cell membrane. Mycoplasmas influence cells in many ways, but one of their most striking effects is the stimulation of blast transformation of resting lymphocytes in cell culture. The mycoplasmas are able to activate lymphocytes of different animal species; B and/or T cells may be stimulated. Such polyclonal activation has various possible immunopathologic consequences.
