Abstract
Reasons for disposal from the dairy herd were studied utilizing the Pennsylvania DHIA file. Low production was the major reason accounting for about 37% of the total disposal. Sterility, udder trouble and mastitis were major problems; and it is suggested that these warrant more attention through research and management. Age-specific disposal rates did exist in these data as evidenced by the highly significant chi-square. Low producers were culled as young cows, whereas udder trouble and mastitis were more troublesome at the older ages. Sterility was a major problem in all age roups. Keywords
