Reasons for Disposal of Pennsylvania Holstein Cattle

Abstract
Reasons for disposal from the dairy herd were studied utilizing the Pennsylvania DHIA file. Low production was the major reason accounting for about 37% of the total disposal. Sterility, udder trouble and mastitis were major problems; and it is suggested that these warrant more attention through research and management. Age-specific disposal rates did exist in these data as evidenced by the highly significant chi-square. Low producers were culled as young cows, whereas udder trouble and mastitis were more troublesome at the older ages. Sterility was a major problem in all age roups.
