Study of the pseudobinary compounds LaNi5-x Fe x (x ≤ 1.2) by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements

Abstract
Mössbauer experiments show that in LaNi5-xFe x (x ≤ 1.2), the iron atoms are almost exclusively located on the 3g sites of the P6/mmm space group. Susceptibility measurements show that, with increasing iron concentration, these compounds change from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic passing through a spin glass like behaviour. For the iron richest compound (x = 1.2) the iron magnetic moments align along the c axis. Comparison of magnetization measurements and Mössbauer results indicates that the substitution of iron for nickel in LaNi5 induces a magnetic moment on the previously non magnetic nickel atoms
