Trends in Higher Education and Community Placements

Abstract
A major trend in higher education in recent years has been the move toward more experiential learning (or community placements). This has been due to student pressures for more relevant content in higher education curricula and multigroup pressures for universities to become more involved in urban problems. Many of the ensuing difficulties can be traced to attempts to combine idealistic concerns with sound learning practices. Some major dilemmas evident in the research discussed in this paper revolve around three issues: control and evaluation, competition for placement sites and positions, and coordination of the experiential process. Recent economic trends have exacerbated these problems.
