Hypotheses on the School as a Social System

Abstract
In illuminating our understanding of the nature of schools as social sys tems, Professor Willower advances a set of propositions of the "middle range" which are based on a study of a single organization and which are related to the problem of pupil control within the school as an inte grative theme. The article is a clear example of the researcher's develop ment of conceptual tools within the framework of a theoretical formula tion. Mr. Willower is associate professor of education at The Pennsylvania State University.
