Abstract
Formulas for the contribution of surface distortion to the surface energy of the {100} and {110} faces of the NaCl‐type lattice and of the {110} face of the CsCl‐type lattice are obtained by a generalization of a treatment described previously for the {100} face of the NaCl structure. Numerical values of the distortion correction to the surface energy of the {110} faces of all of the alkali halides are presented. These results are discussed in relation to the values calculated previously for the {100} face and to the limited experimental information available. Keywords
