Abstract
The growing technological power of Japan has made it vital that U.S. companies be aware of technical developments in that country as rapidly as possible. However, much important information is lost to those who rely solely on English-language publications and databases. In addition to material that is only available in Japanese, conventional sources do not give access to the great amount of information that is exchanged in Japan via personal contacts among scientists and engineers. One approach to accessing such information is to operate a technical operation in Japan staffed by people who are a part of this personal network. This approach, however, requires a cultural adjustment for U.S. executives and the acceptance of trust as a basis jor the free exchange of information.
