Abstract

Mecillinam is a novel β-lactam antibiotic with a wide range of activity against Gramnegative bacteria. The effect of alteration of pH, inoculum size and presence of serum upon the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration of mecillinam was investigated. The stability of the drug in human serum over 24 h at 37°C was investigated and the relationship of β-lactamase production by various bacteria upon the activity of the compound was noted.
