Abstract
The protein metabolism hormone of the pituitary lowers the blood amino-N and the blood urea-N level of rats, dogs and guinea-pigs after adm. of alkaline pituitary extracts. It prevents the rise of blood-amino acids if, 3 hrs. after a 1st adm. of 50 gm. of gelatine, a 2d adm. of the same quantity follows. This is the "regulation effect" in protein metabolism. In 3 cases of Simonds''s pituitary cachexia this regulation effect was missing. In 2 cases of pituitary nanosomia the regulation effect was normal. This was considered proof that the protein metabolism hormone was not identical with the growth hormone.
