Rapid Gas Chromatographic Separation of Diastereomeric Dihalo-Butanes, Pentanes, and Hexanes

Abstract
Rapid GC separation has been achieved for the diastereomeric isomers: meso- and dl-2,3-dichlorobutane, meso- and dl-2,3-dibromobutane, erythro- and threo-2,3-dichloropentane, erythro- and threo-2,3-dibromopentane, meso- and dl-3,4-dichlorohexane, and meso- and dl-3,4-dibromohexane. Separation of the isomeric pairs of dichloroalkanes was achieved in less than 2½ minutes using an 8 ft × ⅛ in., o.d., (0.093 in., i.d.) aluminum column packed with 10% w/w Apiezon L grease modified with 3% Bentone 34 coated onto 60/80 mesh Chromosorb W-DMCS treated support. The pairs of isomeric dibromoalkanes were separated in less than 5 minutes with a resolution greater than 2 on the same column. Retention indices, according to Kovats, have been calculated for the dihaloalkanes. An earlier report demonstrated the separation of the diastereomeric dichloroalkanes on Carbowax 400 chemically bonded to a porous silica bead (1). In most instances, the conventionally coated Apiezon L-Bentone 34 column was superior to the chemically bonded column in terms of resolution and speed of analysis.
