THE ELECTRON SPECTRUM FROM 80 TO 1258 kev OBSERVED ON DISCOVERER SATELLITES 29 AND 31

Abstract
The electron spectrum was measured in nearly polar orbits on Discoverers 29 and 31. Low-energy spectra were time dependent and observed principally in the northern hemisphere at altitudes of 160 to 200 km. Intermediateenergy spectra were observed mainly in the southern auroral zone at an altitude of the order of 560 km. The data for this spectra were observed as groups of jets or sharp rises in counting rate. The high-energy spectra were observed in the region of the South American dipolar anomaly at an altitude of approximates 500 km. Data indicated that this phenomenon must be mainly due to the intersection with the earth's atmosphere of the inner Van Allen Radiation Belt. (M.C.G.)
