Abstract
Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique for analysing a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For trace amounts of VOCs a preconcentration stage is normally required. Adsorption of the components onto a solid sorbent and recovery by thermal desorption is a widely used preconcentration method. A comparison between different adsorbent materials has been carried out by generating a standard atmosphere. The problems encountered during the analysis owing to water adsorption are discussed. Keywords
