Abstract
Observations of magnitudes and colours on the U, B, V system as well as photoelectric measurements of Hβ line intensity are presented for forty-three possible members of the I Scorpii association. The Hβ indices are used to estimate absolute magnitudes for these stars and, in turn, lead to a value for the distance of the association. A second estimate of distance is made using the U, B, V data alone by construction of an evolutionary deviation plot. Both these methods point to a distance of 1 800 parsecs for the I Scorpii association. A brief comparison is drawn between the group and the young associations in the Large Magellanic Cloud and some suggestions are made concerning future investigations. Keywords
