Abstract
A novel apparatus is described for the production of a high density stream of hydrogen atoms and the investigation of the reactions of these atoms with solids at low temperature by i.r. spectroscopy. A critical analysis of the technique is made and its application to the study of the reactions of hydrogen atoms with hydrocarbons and hydrogen cyanide is described. A new reaction with trans-but-2-ene is described. Solid hydrogen cyanide reacts at low temperatures with hydrogen atoms to form an intermediate which may be CH2 NH.
