Abstract
An overview of the need for and the evolution of quality assessment in higher education institutions is briefly presented. The two principal types of institutional evaluation are internal evaluation and external evaluation. The scope of both types of evaluation will depend on the type of institution; however, a three‐stage approach to both types is the generally accepted practice. Five possible purposes of external evaluation are proposed. Keywords
