Abstract
SUMMARY: As the osmolarity of the medium decreases, ‘platelet factor‐3’ (PF‐3) availability increases in erythrocyte as well as platelet suspensions. Associated with this is a parallel increase in PF‐3 activity of the cell‐free supernatant.Addition of glycerol to platelet or erythrocyte suspensions enhances PF‐3 availability of the cell suspensions but not the cell‐free supernatants. It is proposed that glycerol influx alters the orientation or binding of membrane thromboplastic phospholipids, thereby facilitating their reactivity in the PF‐3 assay. This publication has 20 references indexed in Scilit:
