Nonconservative DNA replication in bacteria after thymine starvation.

Abstract
An unusual mode of DNA replication occurs in a small fraction of the DNA in Escherichia coli TAU-bar following thymine deprivation. The physical nature of this newly replicated DNA has been studied and it appears similar in most respects to the nonconservative repair replication of lesions induced by ultraviolet irradiation in bacterial DNA. A model is discussed in which the routine transcription of messenger RNA on the DNA results in single-strand breaks which must be repaired. The model accounts for many of the observed pathological effects of thymine deprivation in bacteria.Keywords
