ACTIVE HAGEMAN FACTOR: A PLASMA LYSOKINASE OF THE HUMAN FIBRINOLYTIC SYSTEM*

Abstract
A simple and sensitive method, the plasmino-plastin generation test (PGT), has been used to investigate the role of Hageman factor in the generation of plasma plasminoplastin (plasmino-gen activator). The test involves determinations of the euglobulin lysis time of samples taken from diluted plasma (20-fold, with distilled water), adjusted to pH 5.3, and incubated at 37[degree]C. The results indicate that the factor developed in the PGT of normal plasma is plasminoplastin and that its generation depends on the presence of adequate amounts of proplasminoplastin (proactivator) and of Hageman factor, with the latter acting as catalyst. In the absence of Hageman factor, no plasminoplastin is formed in the PGT. Evidence also was obtained that plasmin is unrelated to the generation of plasma plasminoplastin and to the factors which interact to form it.
