Abstract
The exact solutions for electromagnetic wave propagation in laminar microstructures lead via a waveguide mechanism to values of the effective dielectric function that lie outside the absolute Wiener quasistatic bounds as well as the more restrictive Hashin-Shtrikman limits. The results explain recent refractive-index data of Egan and Hilgeman on pressed-powder composites. Keywords
