Abstract
Summary: The habitat requirements of Primula vulgaris Huds., P. veris L. and P. elatior (L.) Hill are discussed in terms of their tolerance to waterlogging, drought and shade. Hypotheses generated from this discussion are presented pictorialry and examined in the light of results from competition and field experiments. It is concluded that differences in tolerances to these factors are sufficient to account for the observed habitat requirements, but that the influence of grazing, in particular, can have a strong moderating influence. Grazing pressure varied between the natural habitat types of the species. Keywords
