Abstract
The use of thioglycosides, sulfoxides, and other S-glycosides in carbohydrate chemistry is reviewed, with special focus on their use as glycosylating agents in oligosaccharide synthesis. A survey of available methods for synthesis of thioglycosides is presented, followed by a discussion of available methods of activation of S-glycosides. Both two-step activation (via conversion of a thioglycoside to the corresponding bromide) and direct, one-step activation with thiophilic reagents are considered. Future prospects in the field are also discussed.
