Road Density Models Describing Habitat Effectiveness for Elk

Abstract
Models depicting elk response to changes in the density of forest roads usually require extrapolation beyond the data. Results are likely to reflect the calculation technique rather than elk behavior. One technique described here does produce a model that coincides with actual elk behavior. This model can be used to predict habitat effectiveness for elk at road densities up to six miles per square mile.
