Abstract
A method is described for the spectrophotometric determination of orthophosphate in the presence of nitrate. Reduction of nitrate ions to ammonia is effected by aluminium metal and sodium hydroxide solution, and after the removal of all the ammonia produced (by heating) the phosphate is determined by the formation of the phosphomolybdate complex and reduction to molybdenum blue. The method is suitable for the determination of orthophosphate at a concentration of 10–4 M in the presence of more than 10–1 M of nitrate. It also overcomes interference by fluoride and other halide ions in the molybdenum-blue method. Keywords
