Abstract
Humanae Vitae, the papal encyclical which proscribed artificial methods of birth regulation, drew widespread criticism. Such a response was inevitable for the Pope and the dissenters view natural law, on which the proscription was based, from antagonistic perspectives. An understanding of these perspectives is useful in explaining the papal response to the dissent. Keywords
