Abstract
During the course of adaptation of the egg-adapted pseudo-rabies virus to tissue culture of monkey kidney cells, 2 types of cytopathogenic variations were encountered which appeared to be induced by 2 different strains of virus. One strain (G) produced rounding degeneration, and the other (L) cytolytic giant cell formation. The growth curves of the two strains in Monkey kidney cells were similar, the highest titers achieved on 6th day were 5.5 and 6.0 TCID50 for G and L strains respectively. When an equal dose of each virus was inoculated into Monkey kidney tubes and the tubes treated after an hour with 1.30 dilution of immune serum, plaques appeared in about equal numbers in each tube after an incubation period of 4 days. However, the "L" strain plaques were uniformally 3-4 times larger than the "G" strain plaques. Preliminary tests sug-gested that "L" strain was more infective for rats than the "G" strain. Keywords
