Abstract
For some years the New Zealand University Students’ Association has given careful attention to issues concerning university education. This paper gives a history of NZUSA's policies on assessment, and discusses problems of attempting to reform university assessment practices. Attitudes of staff and students are considered with reference to the national student assessment policy, and problems of co‐ordination and structure are identified. The paper describes a change in emphasis of policy, from improvements in assessment to the potential of teacher training for academic staff.
