MOLECULAR EFFECTS IN THE SECONDARY ELECTRON EMISSION FROM ENTRANCE AND EXIT SURFACES OF THIN SOLID FOILS

Abstract
We present results of the secondary electron emission coefficient γ from thin foi1 targets (2 to 25µg/cm2), for which we measured the secondary electron yields in backward (γb) as well as in forward (γf) direction separately, using both molecular ions and their atomic constituents as projectiles at 0.1 to 1.2MeV/u. The results are compared with monte carlo calculations of the electronic stopping power Se of molecular projectiles and with a modell for Se of clusters of Brandt et al. They show that the proportionality between Se and γ also holds for molecular projectiles at different velocities (vp≈vo, vp≥vo). Such measurements thus offer new possibilities for the understanding of ion-solid-interactions as e.g. the study of screening and wake phenomena
