Abstract
Cestode records from N. American porcupines are reviewed. Monoecocestus americanus and M. variabilis are established as the 2 cestode spp. found. New diagnoses, including a complete list of synonyms, are given. The ovarian index, the ovary-proglottid index, and the position and shape of the testis field are major aids in separating doubtful specimens. Discussion of vaginal development reveals that insemination takes place in the anterior proglottids; the vagina and seminal receptacle are functional when all other reproductive organs are, at most, differentiable as primordia. Along with a more adequate descr. of the embryonated egg it is shown that the outer coat of the egg is covered with minute spines, a feature apparently unique in this family. Life cycle studies on the 2 spp. show that complete larval development occurs in at least 12 spp. of oribatid mites; further identification of the mites is not given. Keywords
