Abstract
Histochemical and ultrastructural investigations indicate that the cell wall of A. defectum is layered. A typical red algal cuticle is present, and the wall is constituted of PAS [periodic acid-Schiff] positive and sulfated polysaccharides. Unusual osmiophilic bands occur in the inner wall layer. Relationships between wall structure and the plasmalemmatal extensions present in this species are discussed. Keywords
