WTMJ‐FM: A case study in the development of FM broadcasting

Abstract
When examining the thirty year history of the medium of FM broadcasting, it may be easier to look at the history of a “typical”; station than at the mass of facts and figures that attempt to describe the whole medium. WTMJ‐FM is an excellent choice for a case study, faithfully following the ups and downs of FM broadcasting. Mr. Christopher H. Sterling, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of speech at the University of Wisconsin, conducted the research for this article while preparing his masters’ thesis in 1966.
