An Historical Note on Chemotherapy of Bacterial Infections

Abstract
In an era so contemptuous of the past it is a matter of some moment that the editors of the Journal have decided to dip into medical history, by occasionally reprinting earlier works which form the foundation of modern pediatrics. One is apt to forget that what is now old was once new, and the vain modernist likes to think that today's challenges outweigh those of former times. Although it may well be that "the ancients were not aware of their own antiquity" (ascribed to "someone" by Z. M. Lebensohn, Pharos, April 1968, p 581), they were certainly aware of their own milieu, which was far more inimical to health than is ours today. A glimpse at some original minds as they considered the medical problems of their day, together with the way in which their new ideas were received, should help us to place the present in perspective.
