Abstract
Utilising the markers horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and lanthanum nitrate, uptake of endogenous material was demonstrated in the crop of the slug, Deroceras reticulatum. Pinocytosis of HRP was observed to occur rapidly, (within 5 min post feeding) in specimens that had previously been starved for 48 h. Similar rates of uptake were recorded for lanthanum but this marker was confined to a paracellular route. The effects of the molluscicides metaldehyde and methiocarb, following ingestion were studied at the electron microscope level. At sub-lethal doses morphological damage to the surface epithelium of the crop was attributable to both active ingredients. In addition the appearance of intracellular vacuoles within crop cells was evident from 24 h post treatment with methiocarb.
