Abstract
The data obtained for the velocities of individual dislocations and for the mechanical properties of “pure” NaCl and LiF crystals indicate that the effect of small impurity is very great whilst the effect of temperature is small. Examination of the results on the basis of a double kink mechanism shows that this mechanism cannot describe the dislocation motion in the crystals under consideration at screw dislocation velocities greater than about 10−3 cm/s. Therefore, the upper limit of the Peierls stress in the crystals may be estimated to be not more than some tens of p/mm2.Keywords
