Abstract
It is generally asserted that valuable information is lost in the squaring operation required to obtain the intensity distribution from the amplitude distribution in an optical image. This paper discusses the possibility of retrieving the phase information by taking into account the restriction that a lens must have a finite aperture. Several related problems are formulated and some examples are given. Keywords
