UTILISATION DE LA BETTERAVE « DANOISE » DANS L'ALIMENTATION DU PORC EN CROISSANCE. III. - VALEUR FOURRAGÈRE ET DIGESTIBILITÉ

Abstract
Two experiments were done to compare the utilization of fodder beet and barley by pigs. In the first, 2 groups of 8 Large-White pigs of initial weight 30 kg were fed on the Lehmann system based on fodder beet or barley so that gains in both groups were always the same. The replacement value of fodder beet thus estimated was 1.25 kg dry matter for I kg barley; it was better utilized by pigs during the finishing period. At the sme stage of growth, the pigs given beet gave a smaller absolute yeild of meat than did those given barley, but percentages of lean and fat cuts in the carcass were the same. In the second experiment 2 pairs of pigs given either fodder beet or barley on the Lehmann system were put in digestibility cages between 30 and 90 kg liveweight. Digestibility of dry matter was higher for beet, 89%, than for barley, 83%. Digestibility of nitrogen was much less for beet than for barley, 57 and 80%, respectively, and the same was true for retention of nitrogen , the corresponding values being 21 and 46%.
