Demonstration of Amyloid Fibrils in Urinary Sediment

Abstract
IN a previous detailed electron microscopical study of renal biopsies from patients with amyloidosis,1 it was clearly demonstrated that amyloid fibrils may be present free in Bowman's spaces, as well as within tubular lumens. The possibility that amyloid fibrils could also appear in the urinary sediment was considered at that time. In one of the reported cases, fibrils consistent with amyloid were recognized in the urinary sediment by electron microscopy. Section from Epon-embedded urinary sediment gave a weak positive reaction to Congo-red stain. However, the available preparations prevented a more definitive statement at that time.
