Abstract
Thirty‐two cases of jaundice complicating pregnancy are reported. Intrahepatic cholestasis was diagnosed in 31 patients and cholelithiasis in one case. In 75% of cases, jaundice appeared during the third trimester. Nine out of 19 multiparas had had jaundice during previous pregnancies (47.3% recurrence rate). The clinical and laboratory findings are reported and discussed. Laboratory tests were used to confirm cholestasis and particularly to exclude other causes of jaundice. Premature labour occurred in 33.3% of cases and ten infants weighed less than 2,500 gm. Two fœtal deaths occurred: one macerated stillbirth and one early neonatal death due to respiratory distress syndrome and prematurity. Five patients developed cholestasis through use of oral contraceptive drugs. Such drugs should be avoided in patients with a previous history of jaundice during pregnancy. Keywords
