Ultrastructure of Porphyra perforata infected with Pythium marinum, a marine fungus

Abstract
A marine species of Pythium, P. marinum Sparrow, was isolated from lesions occurring on Porphyra miniata collected at the north end of the Cape Cod Canal. Zoospores obtained from the isolates were used to infect Porphyra perforata artificially. The fine structure of the host–parasite interaction indicates that during penetration, the fungus modifies the host cell boundary very little while the fungal hypha itself apparently is also not modified during the penetration process. No sheath membrane or sheath was observed surrounding the hyphae. The dissolution of starch grains and finally the disintegration of nearly the entire algal cell culminated the infection process.
