Abstract
The clinical, virologic and immunologic events following vaccination of 36 mumps susceptible children and young adults with the Jeryl Lynn strain of live attenuated mumps virus vaccine are reported. There were no clinical abnormalities that could be attributed to vaccination. As opposed to natural infection, mumps virus could not be isolated from the blood, urine or saliva of the vaccinees. Mumps neutralizing, hemagglutination-inhibiting and complement-fixing antibodies are compared to results obtained from a simultaneous study of 36 cases of natural mumps. Antibody titers after vaccination are lower than after natural infection, but neutralizing antibodies are stable one year after both attenuated and natural infection. Keywords
