Abstract
Some of the broader issues concerning economic inequality are addressed. Inequality is sometimes viewed in relative terms, viz., as a departure from some notion of appropriate distribution, based on needs and desert Inequality can, therefore, be viewed not merely as a measure of dispersion, but also as a measure of the difference between the actual distribution of income, and the distribution (1) according to needs or (2) according to some concept of desert. These two approaches are discussed.
