Abstract
Ordinary dried, unauto-lyzed brewer''s yeast was given in the dose of 1-2 g. per kg. of body wt. daily to 2 patients with pernicious anemia. A hematopoietic response occurred in each instance which, however, was not as great as that evoked by 15 g. of ventriculin daily. Small daily doses of parenteral liver extract evoked still greater response. The effect of the yeast was interpreted as being due to the fact that a great excess of extrinsic factor was supplied to an individual with a diminished but not completely absent intrinsic factor. There is no necessity to conclude, as does Wintrobe, that such yeast contains a hematopoietic principle specific for pernicious anemia. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
