Abstract
Hemolymph analyses, technical procedures, and culture solutions are described which made possible the study of whole, trypsin-treated hearts of Australorbis glabratus explanted in plastic culture flasks. Cells of two types, amebocytic and "epithelial," emerged from explants and persisted in apparently good condition for varying lengths of time. Cell division was not observed. The explanted hearts underwent certain gross and histologic alterations, but the organs retained their essential integrity in vitro, and heartbeat was observed for at least 47 days after explantation.
