Abstract
A method is described for estimating protein and non-protein sulfydryl groups in the presence of each other by means of the reagent di- (5-carboxy-4-nitrophenyl)disulfide. This method was adapted for use in an apparatus for automatic analysis. The method was applied to mixtures of bovine serum albumin and glutathione and to the protein sulfydryl groups and non-protein sulfydryl groups of rat-liver homogenates. Some of the protein sulfydryl groups in rat-liver homogenates are autoxidizable at 37[degree] and this oxidation is reduced or prevented by glutathione to an extent dependent on its initial concentration. Reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate does not increase protein sulfydryl groups in rat-liver homogenates. Keywords
