Abstract
Clinical data from 15 cases of amebic hepatic abscess are presented. Diagnostic criteria established are the presence of the clinical syndrome of amebiasis, demonstration of intestinal lesions by sigmoido-scopic technics, or demonstration of E. histolytica in aspirations or stool, objective evidence of focal hepatic involvement, and unequivocal response to appropriate therapy. Twelve of the cases complained of sharply localized hepatic pain which was in the area of max. tenderness, and which radiated to the back. In 6 cases the pain also radiated to the clavicle. Enlarged liver and wt. loss were present in all cases. Elevation of the diaphragm was present in 10 cases, and an abdominal mass was palpable in 3 and demonstrated by X-ray and by surgery in 1 additional case each. All were successfully treated with Atabrine and carbarsone, surgical incision being required in 2 cases and thoracentesis in 2 cases. One death occurred from a complicating hepatic carcinoma.
