Abstract
The Western Isles supported a winter population of over 980 Redshank during the period 1978–82. These were distributed mainly along the west coast of the Uists, Benbecula and Harris with local concentrations in the north west and eastern Lewis. It is suggested that these comprise both local breeding birds and overwintering Icelandic birds. Many birds were faithful to their wintering sites but ringing recoveries did show that at least some juveniles moved further south for the winter. Breeding numbers appear to be considerably higher than numbers wintering in the Western Isles.
