Abstract
For pt.II, see ibid., vol.22, no.22, p.3631-45 (1989). The 4sns 1S and 4snd 1D Rydberg series of calcium are studied by a multichannel approach of the R-matrix method. It is shown that the energy levels of bound Rydberg series are obtained as the energies which satisfy the equation det mod aRij- delta ijXi mod =O. Here Xi stands for the reciprocal of the logarithmic derivative of the Whittaker function which approximates the wavefunction of a Rydberg electron of the ith channel. The agreement of the calculated values with experiment is excellent for the 1S series but is somewhat poor for the 1D series.
