Elevated blood pressure levels and community drinking water characteristics

Abstract
Statistically significant differences in blood pressure distribution patterns between high school sophomores (16 yr old) from a community with elevated levels of Na (100 mg/l) in drinking water as compared to sophomores from a similarly matched community with < 10 mg Na/l were reported. A follow-up study is presented in which the characteristics of drinking water from the distribution system and homes of representative participants in the original study were compared for 9 heavy metals [Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Na, V and Zn] which are known to affect the occurrence of cardiovascular function. This study was designed to determine the presence (if any) of confounding variables with respect to drinking water characteristics which may affect the interpretation of the original study.
